Solar Water Pumping Systems

Solar water pumping systems can be used for:

• Livestock watering.
• Domestic water sytems.
• Irrigation pumping systems.
• Water aeration.
• Potable water (i.e. drinking water).
• Dewatering and drainage.
• Soil vapor extraction.
• Solar powered fences.

Alternative energy pumping systems are often a combination of sun panels, wind generators, and/or hydro generators. The source(s) of energy are specific to the site location, with solar panels offering the most cost-effective, environmentally sound pumping solutions. Solar powered pumping systems are very popular and offer versatility and independence. Solar panels have no moving parts to break down, and they can be used to irrigate crops, water thirsty livestock and provide portable drinking water in remote locations.

In the following example (see figure below) the water pumping system is a hybrid system utilizing 4 Siemens SR50 solar panels and an Air 303 wind generator. It is located in Central Ontario and provides water for 70 head of cattle all year round. The water source is a well which is located underneath the barn floor and is 80 feet deep. There is a CAP F5 submersible pump which is powered by the solar panels and the wind generator. The alternative energy system has been in operation for 4 years and the farmer reports that his cattle are healthier since they have stopped drinking out of the ponds.
